Checking tyre pressure properly
In short: Check tyre pressure with a gauge when the tyres are cold and set it to the value the manufacturer gives on the fuel flap or door pillar.
In more detail: Too little pressure raises fuel use and wear and makes the car unstable. Too much pressure does not shorten the braking distance but reduces the contact patch.
In detail
- When to measure: Cold, so after only a few kilometres of driving. Warm tyres read about 0.2 to 0.3 bar higher.
- How often: Every two to four weeks and before long trips. Tyres slowly lose air even without damage.
- Load: With a full load the manufacturer usually gives a higher value.
- TPMS: The tyre pressure monitoring system warns of strong pressure loss but does not replace regular measuring.
- Valve caps: They protect the valve from dirt and should always be screwed on.
