ABS, ESP and driver assistance systems
In short: Driver assistance systems help avoid accidents. ABS prevents wheels locking when braking, ESP stabilises the car in bends and during evasive manoeuvres.
In more detail: ABS and ESP are mandatory for new cars in the EU.
In detail
- ABS: Pumps the brake lightning fast, the car stays steerable (bremsweg-und-anhalteweg).
- Braking correctly: With ABS press fully and steer, endure the pulsing.
- ESP: Brakes individual wheels selectively when the vehicle breaks away.
- Emergency brake assist: Detects obstacles and brakes automatically.
- Lane-keeping assist: Warns or steers gently against unintentionally leaving the lane.
- Adaptive cruise control: Keeps distance to the vehicle ahead (abstand-halten-im-strassenverkehr).
- Blind-spot warning: Warns of vehicles in the blind spot.
- Limits: Assistants do not replace attention and adapted speed (aufmerksamkeit-und-multitasking).
