Handwashing and everyday hygiene
In short: Thorough handwashing is one of the most effective measures against the transmission of pathogens. Soap removes dirt and germs from the skin.
In more detail: Duration and thoroughness are decisive, not water temperature.
In detail
- Duration: Lather with soap for 20 to 30 seconds, including between fingers, thumbs and fingertips.
- When: After using the toilet, before eating and cooking, after coming home, after blowing your nose.
- Drying: Thoroughly with a clean towel; damp hands retain germs.
- Disinfectant: Usually unnecessary in everyday life, useful only when water and soap are missing.
- Skin care: Moisturising protects against dry, cracked hands.
- Coughing and sneezing: Into the elbow, not the hand.
- Kitchen: Cut raw meat and vegetables separately, clean chopping boards.
- Children: Practise playfully with songs (erkaeltung-und-grippe-unterscheiden).
