SteamOS, Zorin OS and other special distributions
In short: Besides the big distributions there are special systems: SteamOS for games, Zorin OS for Windows switchers, Tails and Qubes for privacy, Raspberry Pi OS for mini computers.
In more detail: They are usually tailored to one goal and use existing families for that.
In detail
- SteamOS: Valve’s system for the Steam Deck, Arch-based with KDE Plasma in desktop mode and an immutable image. Proton translates Windows games.
- Bazzite, Nobara, ChimeraOS: game-oriented systems based on Fedora.
- Zorin OS: Ubuntu-based, interface can be switched to a Windows or macOS look.
- Tails: runs from a USB stick, routes everything through Tor, leaves no traces.
- Qubes OS: security through isolation, each task in its own virtual machine.
- Kali and Parrot: penetration testing tools (Kali Linux).
- Raspberry Pi OS: Debian-based for the Raspberry Pi.
- Alpine: tiny, for containers (Alpine Linux).
