Youth employment protection and working hours when self-employed
In short: The Youth Employment Protection Act applies to employees, not to the self-employed. But anyone who runs a business alongside training must respect rest periods and compulsory schooling.
In more detail: For apprentices under 18, maximum limits of 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week, rest periods and breaks apply. A side business must not undermine these goals. The training company may prohibit side activities that harm the training.
In detail
- Self-employed: the Act regulates no working hours for the self-employed, but protection from danger and health remain important.
- Training: vocational school and training take priority.
- Dangerous work: certain activities (piecework, night work, hazardous substances) remain off-limits for young people.
- Agreement: coordinate with the company and parents, see Side activity during training.
