Installing updates: why and how
In short: Updates close security holes and fix bugs. Install them promptly, ideally automatically.
In more detail: Software has bugs. Once a security hole becomes known, attackers exploit it quickly. Makers deliver updates that close these holes. If you do not update, you stay vulnerable.
In Depth
- Windows: Settings → Windows Update → “Check for updates”. Leave automatic updates on.
- Restart: Some updates only finish after a restart.
- Programs: Keep browser, PDF reader, Office and co. up to date too.
- Phone: Settings → software update. Update apps in the store.
- Router: It also needs updates occasionally.
- If an update takes very long: Do not switch off! Be patient, keep power connected.
- Old systems: Systems without support (for example Windows 7) get no more security updates.
