Cleaning a computer: dust, keyboard and screen done right

In short: Regular, careful cleaning keeps the computer cooler and quieter: blow dust out of fans, knock out the keyboard, and clean the screen only with a soft cloth and little liquid.

In more detail: Dust clogs fans and heat sinks, so the machine gets hot, loud and slower (thermal throttling). Grease and crumbs on keyboard and screen are annoying and unhygienic.

In Depth

Preparation

Switch off, unplug, and on laptops disconnect the battery if possible. Wait until everything has cooled. Work anti-statically (not over carpet, touch metal first).

Case and fans

  • Clean dust filters and vents with a brush or vacuum (low setting, nozzle at a distance).
  • On a desktop PC open the side panel and blow dust out with compressed air or a bellows. Hold the fans so they do not overspin.
  • Do not use an ordinary vacuum directly on circuit boards (static charge). No liquids inside the case.
  • Rhythm: desktop every 6–12 months, more often with pets; on laptops keep the vents clear regularly.

Keyboard, mouse and screen

  • Keyboard: turn upside down and tap lightly, clean with a brush or compressed air; wipe key tops with a slightly damp microfibre cloth and some isopropanol (70%).
  • Mouse: clean sensor and feet.
  • Screen: dampen the cloth, do not spray the screen; no glass cleaner, ammonia or kitchen paper (scratches, coating). Wipe gently without pressure.
  • Washing hands beforehand saves cleaning.

When to call a professional

For thermal paste renewal, gummed-up fans, rattling noises or warranty seals on the device, better ask a repair shop; opening and reassembling laptops is delicate.
