Signing in, user accounts and switching users
In short: A user account separates your data and settings from those of others. You sign in with a password, PIN or fingerprint. When you leave, lock the screen.
In more detail: Every person on the computer should have their own account. The account determines background, files and rights. An administrator account may install programs and change settings; a standard account is restricted but safer.
In Depth
- Locking: Windows key + L. That way nobody can read along when you step away.
- Signing out: Ends your session, another person can sign in.
- Switching users: Your account stays signed in, someone else signs in alongside.
- Forgotten password: Via “Reset password” or the Microsoft account page.
- PIN/fingerprint: Quick, but valid only on this device.
- Guest account: Restricted for visitors (no longer available everywhere).
