Sulphates in shampoo (SLS and SLES)

In short: Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulphate (SLES) are surfactants that create foam and dissolve grease.

In more detail: SLS cleans strongly and can irritate and dry out sensitive skin. SLES is milder. Both are considered safe at the right concentration, but are not ideal for dry or sensitive skin.

In Depth

  • Alternatives: coco-glucoside, decyl glucoside, sodium cocoyl isethionate, betaines.
  • Foam is not a quality feature: It says nothing about cleaning power.
  • Scalp: People prone to dandruff or itching try mild surfactants.
  • Environment: Surfactants should be biodegradable.
