Silicones in cosmetics
In short: Silicones (for example dimethicone) make skin and hair smooth and shiny and form a protective film.
In more detail: They are unremarkable for health but not biodegradable. Cyclic silicones (D4, D5, D6) accumulate in the environment and are strongly restricted in rinse-off products in the EU.
In Depth
- Recognising: Names end in “-cone” or “-siloxane” (dimethicone, amodimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane).
- Hair: Silicones can build up with frequent use and should occasionally be washed out with surfactants.
- Skin: They do not generally clog pores, but some sensitive skin reacts.
- Alternatives: vegetable oils, ester compounds.
