Foods that are toxic to dogs and cats

In short: Some foods that people tolerate well are toxic to dogs and cats. These include chocolate, grapes, onions and xylitol.

In more detail: Chocolate contains theobromine, which dogs and cats break down poorly. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. Onions, garlic and leek damage red blood cells. Xylitol (a sugar alcohol) causes life-threatening low blood sugar.
