Fibre and protein
In short: Fibre is indigestible plant material that supports digestion and satiety. Protein builds muscle and tissue.
In more detail: Adults should eat about 30 g of fibre a day. A product may be advertised as “high in fibre” from 6 g per 100 g, as a “source of” from 3 g. For protein, about 0.8 g per kg body weight is the guideline; athletes need more.
Our context: The product scanner gives small bonus points for lots of fibre and protein when the data names them.
In Depth
- Sources of fibre: wholegrain, legumes, vegetables, fruit, nuts, oats.
- Sources of protein: meat, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes, tofu, nuts.
- “High protein” products: They are often expensive and highly processed. A normal diet usually covers the need.
- More water: Drink enough when you eat more fibre.
