Aluminium in deodorants
In short: Antiperspirants often contain aluminium salts (for example aluminium chlorohydrate). They narrow the sweat glands and reduce sweating.
In more detail: The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment advised keeping skin absorption low. A link to breast cancer or Alzheimer’s has not been proven. You should not use aluminium-containing products on freshly shaved or damaged skin.
In Depth
- Difference: A deodorant works against odour, an antiperspirant against sweat.
- Without aluminium: baking soda, zinc salts, alum stone and plant ingredients.
- Sprays: Avoid inhaling.
- Total exposure: Aluminium also occurs in food, cookware and drinking water.
