Standby consumption
In short: Standby is the electricity devices use in standby mode even though they appear to be switched off.
In more detail: Single devices only need 0.5 to 5 watts. Together, 20 to 60 watts often run around the clock: TV, router, receiver, console, chargers, printer. At a constant 25 W load that is about 220 kWh a year, around €72 at 33 ct.
Our context: The energy calculator includes “standby of all devices” as its own item in the appliance cost list.
In Depth
- Measuring: A socket meter shows standby exactly.
- Switching off: Switchable power strip for TV, console and accessories. Better leave routers and NAS running.
- Power adapters: Chargers draw some power even with no device connected.
- Old devices: Older devices often use clearly more in standby than new ones (EU limits have restricted this for years).
- Smart home: Wireless sockets and sensors use power themselves, which should be counted too.
