Stocks and the stock exchange: basics for beginners
In short: A share is a stake in a company; prices fluctuate, gains come from price rises and dividends, losses up to total loss are possible, diversification lowers risk.
In more detail: Whoever owns a company through shares owns a part of it. At the stock exchange buyers and sellers meet; the price arises from supply and demand. This is not investment advice, only basic knowledge; minors may hold depots only with their parents’ consent.
In Depth
Terms
- Share: stake in equity; rights (dividend, voting right for common shares).
- Dividend: profit distribution (not guaranteed).
- Price, bid/ask (spread), trading venue (Xetra, Tradegate, Nasdaq), order (market, limit, stop).
- Depot: account where securities are held; broker/neobroker or bank.
- Index (DAX, MSCI World, S&P 500): basket of many shares; ETF: fund replicating an index.
- P/E ratio, market capitalisation, volatility.
Opportunities and risks
Over the long term broadly diversified stock markets historically brought returns above interest and inflation, but with fluctuations (−30 to −50 % have happened in crises) and without guarantee. Single shares can become completely worthless (insolvency). Risks: market risk, company risk, currency risk, interest changes, behaviour (panic selling, FOMO, herd instinct). Rule: invest only money you will not need for years; first an emergency fund (call money) and repay debts.
How to approach it sensibly
- Diversification: many companies/countries, easiest via a world ETF.
- Savings plan (fixed monthly amount): cost averaging, discipline.
- Mind costs (order fees, fund costs TER, spreads).
- Time horizon ≥ 10 years.
- Do not bet on tips from social media, forums or chat groups (pump and dump, finfluencers with self-interest, scam platforms, “guaranteed return” = warning sign).
- No loans for speculating, no leveraged products/CFDs for beginners (high loss rate).
- Document: purchase date/price for taxes.
Taxes and practicalities
In Germany: flat-rate withholding tax 25 % + solidarity surcharge (+ church tax if applicable) on gains/dividends; saver’s allowance (€1,000 per person and year) via exemption order; advance lump sum for accumulating funds; foreign withholding tax. Minors: depot as junior depot with parents; business/income ≠ capital income. Sources: consumer centre, Stiftung Warentest, BaFin, annual reports. A paper trading account (practice depot) helps practise without real money.
