HTTP 414 URI Too Long
In short: The requested address is longer than the server processes.
In more detail: Servers and proxies limit the length of the URL, often to about 8 KB (nginx: 8 KB, others less). Overlong addresses usually come from huge query strings, for example when a lot of data is passed via GET.
In Depth
When it occurs
- A form with very many fields that sends via GET instead of POST.
- An endless redirect loop that keeps appending more parameters.
What you can do
- As a user: shorten the address or open the page again from the home page.
- Developers: send large amounts of data via POST and check redirects for loops.
