Upscalers and lag: retro consoles on a modern TV
In short: Retro consoles deliver 240p/480i, modern TVs need HDMI and often scale poorly and slowly themselves; upscalers such as RetroTINK, OSSC or Framemeister convert with low delay.
In more detail: The problem: old consoles send low resolutions with interlacing (240p/480i/576i), modern TVs (HDMI, 1080p/4K) deinterlace and scale with processing time: picture washed out, delayed, artefacts. An external upscaler solves this.
In Depth
Understanding lag
- Input latency: time from button press to picture. Tube ≈ 0, modern TV without game mode 50 to 100 ms+; with game mode 10–20 ms.
- Causes: deinterlacing, scaling, picture enhancements (noise filter, motion smoothing), HDMI handshake.
- Measuring: lag testers, camera method, online tools.
- Rhythm/platform games show clearly beyond 2–3 frames.
- Emulation: additional latency (run-ahead in RetroArch, USB controllers).
Upscalers and converters
- OSSC (Open Source Scan Converter): open source, lag-free (line mode), SCART/component/VGA → HDMI, no deinterlacing progress, but clean (pixel-exact, scanline options).
- RetroTINK 2X/5X/4K: convenient, composite/S-Video/RGB, low latency, filters (scanlines).
- Framemeister XRGB-Mini: good scaling, more latency (settings!).
- Cheap converters (composite → HDMI): inexpensive, often delay, poor colour, but usable for casual players.
- HDMI mods/FPGA consoles (Analogue Pocket/Mega Sg, MiSTer): hardware re-implementation, exact reproduction, digital output.
- Capture cards (recording) have their own latency, not for playing.
Settings on the TV
- Enable game mode; picture enhancers off (noise reduction, motion smoothing, sharpness).
- Aspect ratio: 4:3 for old games (original), avoid overscan/zoom (“Just Scan”/“Pixel Mapping”).
- Pixel-perfect/integer scaling: whole-number magnification avoids blur.
- Scanlines/CRT filters optional for tube charm; BFI reduces motion blur (OLED).
- Check colour profile and gamma.
- Line doubling (240p → 480p) works better than interlace deinterlacing.
- Cable quality (SCART/RGB) remains important.
Recommendation by budget
- Casual players: modern TV with game mode + usable composite/SCART→HDMI converter; realistic expectations.
- Enjoyment/accuracy: RetroTINK + RGB-SCART cable, optionally OSSC.
- Purists: CRT + original cables.
- Comfort: mini/MiSTer consoles, emulation with shaders.
- Care: good cables, power supply for mods, warranty/used purchase.
- Prices for upscalers are sometimes high (€100–250); weigh costs against playing time.
- When buying watch for authenticity (counterfeit devices).
