Smart home: Matter, Zigbee and Home Assistant
In short: A smart home connects lamps, heating, sensors and switches and lets them work together. What matters is the common language of the devices and where the data is processed: in the manufacturer’s cloud or at your home.
Radio standards
- Wi-Fi: available everywhere, but many devices burden the network and need more power.
- Zigbee: economical radio network in which devices pass messages on to each other (mesh). Needs a hub (gateway). Very common for lamps and sensors.
- Z-Wave: similar, different radio band.
- Thread: modern, power-saving IP-based mesh, basis of Matter.
- Bluetooth: near, simple, limited range.
Matter
Matter is a cross-vendor standard for the devices’ language so devices of different companies work together. It runs over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread and works locally, i.e. without needing the manufacturer’s cloud. Setup by QR code happens through the Apple, Google or Amazon app.
Hub: cloud or local?
- Manufacturer’s cloud: convenient, but you depend on the service (shutdown, privacy, internet needed).
- Local hub: Home Assistant (free software, often on a Raspberry Pi) controls hundreds of device types in your own network, with rules like “if window open, then heating off”.
Security and privacy
- Put IoT devices in a separate network (guest Wi-Fi/VLAN), not the same as laptop and data.
- Change default passwords, apply updates. Manufacturers that no longer update are a risk.
- Choose cameras and microphones critically, access from the internet via WireGuard instead of open ports.
- Check which data goes to the cloud.
Getting started
Start with a few sockets or lamps and a local solution. More on routers and networks: Router, Wi-Fi standards.
