PAL, NTSC and region codes for consoles and games

In short: PAL and NTSC are different analogue TV standards (50 vs. 60 Hz), region codes lock games and films to certain world regions; this affects compatibility, speed and collector value.

In more detail: Consoles and games were released regionally: Europe (PAL), North America/Japan (NTSC-U/NTSC-J). Whoever imports or collects must know the differences.

In Depth

PAL vs. NTSC

  • NTSC: 60 fields/s (59.94 Hz), 525 lines (North America, Japan).
  • PAL: 50 fields/s, 625 lines (Europe, Australia).
  • Consequences for games: PAL versions often ran slower (50 Hz) and with black bars if poorly adapted (PAL optimisation); NTSC is faster/smoother.
  • Modern consoles/TVs are mostly 60 Hz; many PAL consoles have a 50/60 Hz switch or software option.
  • Frequency affects game speed, music tempo, speedruns.

Region codes and region locks

  • Region locks prevent games from one world region on consoles of another (Mega Drive, SNES pins/cartridges, PS1 disc ID, DVD region codes 1–6, Blu-ray A/B/C).
  • Form factor: often only the case differs (SNES pins).
  • Region-free: Switch, PS4/PS5, Xbox One (mostly), Nintendo DS (partly), PC games (but price/store restrictions).
  • Workarounds: adapters, region mods, soft mods, flash carts; mind legal situation and warranty (circumventing copy protection may touch copyright, see emulators).

When buying

  • Label: PAL/NTSC-U/NTSC-J/region, codes (e.g. SLES = PS1 PAL, SLUS = US, SLPS = JP).
  • Voltage/plug: US consoles with 110 V power supply, check the power supply and plug for 230 V (never connect without a suitable power supply!).
  • Language of texts/manual.
  • Collector value: PAL versions often rarer/more expensive (or vice versa), depending on title.
  • Customs/taxes on imports (import VAT, de minimis limits).

When selling (Vinted & co.)

  • State the region (PAL/NTSC/JP) in title/description; buyers often ask.
  • Name compatibility (“does not run on PAL console without adapter”).
  • Condition and completeness (case, manual).
  • Photos of back/region imprint.
  • Truthful statements avoid complaints.
  • For commercial sale: description complete, mind warranty.
  • More: game authenticity, storage, shipping.
