NAS server
In short: A NAS server is a server that works as a NAS, that is, it provides storage space and files on the network. The term means the device including its software.
In more detail: It can be a ready-made NAS device, a self-built computer with a NAS operating system such as TrueNAS or OpenMediaVault, or an ordinary Linux or Windows server with shares.
In Depth
- Services: file shares, users and permissions, snapshots (states you can roll back to), backup targets, media server, Docker.
- Permissions: each user only gets access to the folders they need.
- Self-built or ready-made: ready-made devices are simple and efficient. A self-build is more flexible and powerful but needs more upkeep.
- Security: install updates, use strong passwords, two-factor login and do not expose the NAS directly to the internet. A VPN home is better.
- Backup: here too, RAID protects against disk failure, not against deletion, malware (ransomware) or fire.
