In short: Smishing is phishing via SMS or messenger.

In more detail: Typical are parcel notifications (“Your parcel could not be delivered”), bank warnings and messages about supposed prizes with a short link.

Dangers

The link leads to a fake page or downloads a malicious app. On a smartphone you often do not see the full address.

Protection

Do not open links from unexpected SMS, check the sender, install apps only from official stores, report suspicious SMS to the provider. See phishing.
