Smartphone security: The most important settings and habits

In short: A phone contains almost a whole life; screen lock, updates, app choice, permissions and backups protect it against loss, theft and malware.

In more detail: Smartphones store photos, messages, accounts and payment methods. With a few settings and habits you already reach a high level of protection.

In Depth

Basic protection

  • Screen lock with PIN (at least 6 digits) or password, plus fingerprint/face. No simple pattern.
  • Install updates for system and apps automatically; old devices also need security patches. Replace devices without updates.
  • Encryption is active by default on modern devices and works with a strong lock.
  • Enable locate and lock device (Google “Find My Device”, Apple “Find My”).
  • Backup of the data (cloud or computer).

Apps and permissions

Install apps only from the official stores (Google Play, App Store) and check provider and ratings. Remove unused apps. Grant permissions sparingly (location “only while using”, camera, microphone, contacts) and review them in settings. Be suspicious of flashlight or game apps asking for many permissions. Sideloading (APK from the web) only from known sources.

Network and communication

Public Wi-Fi only with VPN or for non-critical things; switch off Bluetooth and NFC when not needed. Beware of phishing by SMS, messenger and email (smishing), do not open links from unknown messages, check parcel-service and bank SMS especially. Use two-factor (authenticator app or passkeys) and a password manager.

On loss or suspicion

Loss: locate, lock, possibly wipe remotely, have the SIM blocked (provider, emergency number 116 116), change passwords, file a report in case of theft. Suspected malware: check unusual battery drain, ads, unknown apps, run a security scan, if in doubt factory reset (after backup). Children and teenagers: parental-control settings and conversations about risks.
