Shareware
In short: Shareware is software that may be tried and passed on for free, but you are expected to pay if you like it.
In more detail: The model emerged in the 1980s (for example PC-Write). Today it is mostly called a trial version.

- Nagware: constantly reminds you to buy.
Distinction
Unlike freeware, permanent use costs money. Modern replacements are freemium and subscriptions (see SaaS).
