GoldenEye
In short: GoldenEye (also called a Petya variant) is a ransomware from 2016 that specifically targeted HR departments with job application e-mails.
In more detail: GoldenEye is named after the James Bond film. The malware came disguised as a job application by e-mail with an Excel and PDF attachment. It encrypted not only files but also the master file table of the hard disk, so the system could no longer boot.
In Depth
Special feature
The computer started with a skull screen. Encryption only began after a restart.
Distinction
GoldenEye is sometimes confused with NotPetya (June 2017). NotPetya used EternalBlue and was more of a wiper that destroyed data without making it seriously recoverable.
Protection
Open documents from applications only after checking (for example in a sandbox), backups, patches.
