Home Assistant and smart home: automating self-hosted
In short: Home Assistant connects smart home devices of different manufacturers locally on your own hardware, enables automations and dashboards and protects privacy compared with cloud solutions.
In more detail: Smart home devices (lamps, sockets, sensors, thermostats) come from many manufacturers with own apps and clouds. Home Assistant (HA, open source) brings them together in one place, runs locally (Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NAS, VM) and often works without internet too.
In Depth
Building blocks
- Radio standards: Zigbee (mesh, low power, coordinator stick), Z-Wave, Thread/Matter (new cross-manufacturer standard), Wi-Fi (ESP devices, Tasmota/ESPHome), Bluetooth, 433 MHz.
- Protocols/integrations: MQTT, REST, Modbus (e.g. PV inverter), Hue bridge, Fritz!Box, Shelly, Sonos, Kodi, energy dashboard (electricity meter, solar, heat pump).
- Hardware: Raspberry Pi 4/5 or mini PC with SSD (SD cards die), Zigbee USB stick (e.g. SkyConnect, Sonoff dongle).
- Installation: Home Assistant OS, container (Docker), supervised; add-ons (Zigbee2MQTT, Mosquitto, ESPHome, Node-RED, Grafana, Vaultwarden).
Automations
Principle trigger – condition – action:
automation:
- alias: "Hall light on motion"
trigger:
- platform: state
entity_id: binary_sensor.hall_motion
to: "on"
condition:
- condition: sun
after: sunset
action:
- service: light.turn_on
target: { entity_id: light.hall }
data: { brightness_pct: 40 }Examples: lower heating when a window is open, scenes (“cinema”), notification for water leak/smoke detector, presence detection (phone app/Wi-Fi), washing machine done, charge with PV surplus, blinds by sun position. Editor via UI or YAML; blueprints for sharing.
Privacy and security
- Local instead of cloud: data stays in the house; cloud access only when needed (Nabu Casa or own VPN/WireGuard).
- Do not expose unprotected to the internet (see home server from outside); MFA, strong passwords, updates, backups (snapshot to an external target).
- Separate the IoT network (own VLAN/guest Wi-Fi): cheap devices are often insecure (default passwords, no updates).
- Cameras/microphones/voice assistants: recording rights, inform housemates/guests (GDPR limited in the private sphere, but be considerate).
- Legal: installed devices CE/radio approval; work on mains voltage only by professionals (electrician!).
- Resilience: light switches must keep working (keep physical switches, no single point of failure).
Getting started and tips
- Small goal: one sensor + one automation (e.g. temperature → notification).
- Standardise on Zigbee/Matter, few manufacturers, naming scheme for entities.
- Save/monitor energy (adapter plugs with metering, electricity meter reader head).
- Documentation and backups.
- ESP32/ESPHome: cheap own sensors (temperature, soil moisture).
- Cost: hardware €100–200 for a sensible starter set.
- Learning value: networking, MQTT, YAML, APIs, Linux, Docker – a good IT specialist project (project documentation!).
- Limits: maintenance effort, updates can break configurations: read changelogs, make backups.
