Discord
In short: Discord is a platform for text, voice and video chat that is used mostly by gamers and communities.
In more detail: Users join servers (these are group rooms, not to be confused with a server as a machine), which are divided into channels for text and voice. Roles control who may do what.
In Depth
- Roles and permissions: moderators and admins manage channels and members.
- Bots: programs that take part in the server like users, for example for music, moderation or notifications. See bots.
- Webhooks: a web address to which a program can send messages into a channel, for example when a new post appears.
- Use in projects: websites use Discord as a community meeting place or for messages to the team.
- Notes: the platform’s age limits and privacy rules apply. Do not open invitation links blindly, because there is fraud with fake links and phishing.
