Client rollout: imaging, cloning and automatic installation

In short: Instead of setting up each computer by hand, use images, cloning or automated installation (Autopilot, MDT, PXE, Kickstart) so all devices are identical and quickly ready for use.

In more detail: With 5 PCs manual work pays, with 50 it no longer does. Rollout means providing many clients reproducibly with operating system, drivers, software and settings.

In Depth

Methods

  • Imaging: set up a reference computer, create an image (Clonezilla, Macrium, dd, DISM/WIM) and apply it to other computers. Drawback: driver/hardware differences, image gets outdated.
  • Sysprep (Windows): prepares an image in a generalised way (remove SID/names).
  • Unattended/answer files (unattend.xml), Kickstart/Preseed/cloud-init (Linux): automatic installation without input.
  • Network boot (PXE): computer boots over the LAN, loads installer/image (WDS, MDT, SCCM, FOG, netboot.xyz).
  • Windows Autopilot + Intune: device arrives shrink-wrapped, user signs in, policies/software come from the cloud (zero-touch).
  • Configuration management: Ansible, Puppet, Chef, DSC for desired state; package managers (winget, apt, Chocolatey) for software.

Procedure (classic)

  1. Install the reference system cleanly, updates, standard software, policies.
  2. Driver packs per model or universal drivers.
  3. Create image (versioned, documented, tested).
  4. Distribute (USB, PXE, multicast).
  5. Follow-up: computer name, domain join, users, licence/activation, BitLocker, MDM enrolment.
  6. Test/acceptance, inventory, handover. Important: back up data before overwriting (the image erases), disk encryption, BIOS settings (UEFI/Secure Boot, boot order).

Maintenance and pitfalls

  • Images age: update monthly or installation automation instead of fat images (thin image + software distribution).
  • Licences: OEM/volume licence, KMS/MAK activation.
  • SID duplicates/name conflicts with non-generalised clones.
  • Driver chaos (hardware variety) → standardised models.
  • Distributing large images: network bandwidth, multicast.
  • Security: protect the image source, admin passwords not in plain text in answer files, Secure Boot and signed installers.
  • Smaller environments: Ventoy (USB with several ISOs), own script (PowerShell/winget), Autopilot light.

Home projects and exam

  • Reinstalling your own PC: script/list of winget packages, dotfiles in Git, backup of data, drivers from the manufacturer; a reinstall then takes under an hour.
  • Cloning to a new SSD (Macrium/Clonezilla), adjust size, check boot.
  • Exam (IHK): advantages of imaging/automation, steps, risks (drivers, licences), PXE procedure, difference cloning vs. image vs. reinstall.
